Final Thoughts

I think this is a great yarn for beginner knitters/ crocheters who may not want to invest in a higher quality yarn. There are a lot of color options to choose from (51 to be exact!), and this yarn could be used to make anything from scarves to baskets. If you were a yarn newbie wandering into the yarn aisle for the first time, without a project in mind, this yarn would be a pretty safe choice to pick up and take home to practice on and find a pattern later. Lots of beginner/ easy patterns are made with this weight of yarn, so it would be easy to substitute Hometown in to any other of those patterns.

For someone like me who has been crocheting/ knitting for years and doesn't mind investing in yarn, this wouldn't be my first choice. This yarn sheds a bit, which I noticed more on my throw pillow than the basket. Yarn shedding or pilling is my #1 yarn pet peeve. Also, this might be a personal dislike, but I'm not a huge fan of the slight sheen on this yarn. I prefer a more matte look.

That being said, this was a really good yarn for The Bondi Basket. With the stitches being so tight, I didn't have a problem with shedding or pilling and the thickness of this yarn was good for a structural piece like this basket. As much as I don't LOVE acrylic yarns, I don't mind them for structural pieces. Acrylic yarn doesn't have a very nice drape. But structural pieces shouldn't drape. The rigidity can work in the favor of baskets, stockings, etc.

Bottom line, Lion Brand Yarn Hometown USA is great for beginners, budget yarn shoppers, and anyone looking for a yarn for stiffer, structural piece.
