Easy Crochet Bean Stitch Tutorial + Video

Often mistaken for a fancy cluster or puff stitch, the unique  Bean Stitch is its own character. The skipped stitches in the Bean Stitch Pattern weaves together in a slanted texture, creating an almost basket weave effect.

Imagine your crochet projects coming alive with a new depth, dimension, and texture that's reminiscent of a woven basket. Blankets, scarves, or garments, the Bean Stitch adds a touch of elegance to them all. Play around with different yarns, weights, and colors and watch how this stitch adds a modern, cozy, and moody touch to your creations. With some practice, this stitch will become a cherished addition to your crochet toolbox, adding that special something to your handmade items.

Is The Bean Stitch actually a Puff Stitch?

Well no, but they are very similar. Here is the difference:

The first step in working a Puff stitch is to yarn over. For the Puff Stitch, you would yarn over, insert your hook, pull through a loop. You would do this multiple times before finally yarning over and pulling through all the loops.

For the Bean Stitch, your first step is to insert your hook, yarn over, pull through a loop. Then you would yarn over, insert your hook, yarn over, pull through a loop. You do this twice and then finally yarn over and pull through all the loops.

So you can see that the difference between the Bean Stitch and the Puff Stitch is when we are yarning over. The Puff Stitch starts with a yarn over and The Bean Stitch does not. For the Bean Stitch you will first insert your hook without yarning over, and the following two times you insert your hook back into the same stitch you will yarn over before inserting your hook. For the Puff Stitch, you always yarn over before inserting your hook into the stitch, and never after.
